Brookfield broke a scoreless deadlock with a two-out, two-run sixth inning, and then escaped two bases-loaded jams to blank Putnam County, 2-0, in the opening round of the Class 2 District 6 softball tournament.
Mya Sackrey doubled with two outs in the sixth, and Greenlee McCollum's drive to right was mishandled, scoring Sackrey with the game's first run. Gracyn Beckman then followed with a single to right, plating McCollum.
Putnam managed to fill the bases with traffic throughout the game; however, the Bulldogs thwarted all attempts to score. Beckman started and worked around four hits, a walk and a few errors over five innings. She had two strikeouts, earning the win. Emma Sensenich (Hold) relieved in the sixth and got the first two outs, inducing a groundout and striking out the next batter. An error bookended by a pair of walks, and Putnam had the bases juiced, but Sensenich struck out the #2 hitter swinging to end the Midgets' threat. Emree Littrel came on in the seventh, coaxing a pair of flyouts, around a walk. Another free pass and error later, Putman was threatening again, but Littrell fanned the next batter to earn the save.
McCollum had two base hits for the Bulldogs, while Hadlye Sackrey collected a hit and walk; Jerzi Fields had a walk; and Beckman added a walk and stolen base to go along with her hit and RBI.
The Bulldogs (11-11) play No. 1 seed South Harrison (22-6) in Saturday's semifinal action at Trenton. First pitch is at 10 am.
