Maddie Wilbeck drained a three-pointer at the buzzer, as Brookfield upset Milan, 37-35, in girls varsity basketball action Tuesday night. The Wildcats entered the contest undefeated and winners of this past weekend's Tri-Rivers Classic Tournament.
With 1:37 remaining and a 32-31 lead, the Bulldogs looked to milk the clock, forcing the Wildcats to foul. Four intentional fouls put Wilbeck on the line for two free throws, in which she hit the first one. The 'Cats rebounded the second shot, but a long pass was picked off by Greenlee McCollum, who was immediately fouled with 29.4 seconds to go. McCollum missed both, but Madi Lumsden corralled a loose ball and was fouled. Lumsden hit the first of two, and the Wildcats' Marian Dabney quickly answered at the other end with an off-balanced prayer off the glass to draw the 'Cats within one with 17.4 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, the 'Dogs failed to execute a perfectly drawn-up inbounds play, with an errant full-court pass. To make matters worse, no time had run off the clock, and the Wildcats had the ball under their own basket. The 'Cats capitalized on their inbounds play with a short shot in the paint to take a 35-34 lead with 9 ticks to go. Following a timeout, the 'Dogs perfectly executed the final dramatic sequence. Jerzi Fields inbounded to McCollum, who drove the length of the floor, pulling four defenders with her in the paint, where she calmly dished to a waiting Wilbeck on the left wing for her last-second heroics.
Wilbeck collected a game-high 13 points, including nine in the final period, along with five assists, two rebounds and a steal. More importantly, her lock-down defense held the much bigger Dabney, the 'Cats leading scorer (19 points per game), to five points.
Lumsden (2 steals) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Fields (2 assists, 2 steals) added seven points, five in the fourth quarter, and McCollum (5 steals, 3 assists, rebound) had five points. Maggie Bennett had a rebound and steal, and Gracyn Beckman had a steal.
Kierstyn Sutch scored a game-high 11 points, including a three, and Breckin Thudium netted 10 points, as Brookfield's JV squad completed the sweep with a convincing 35-15 victory.
Emma Sensenich scored six points, Maggie Bennett had a trey, Haven Stufflebean and Haily Swan each scored two points, and Gracyn Beckman chipped in a free throw.
The Lady Bulldogs JV team (1-0) travels to Macon on Thursday, while the varsity squad (3-3) hosts Knox County on Friday.
