All's "bell" in Brookfield!
Fueled by a pair of big plays and a dominating and stubborn defense, the Bulldogs blanked Marceline, 14-0, in Friday night's annual Bell Game at Burlington Field.
Colton Parn scored on a 44-yard punt return, and Kendrell Carter sealed the deal with a 47-yard TD run in the game's final moments.
The Tigers opened the contest with a long drive, but Xavier Sada snuffed it out with an interception inside the Brookfield 20-yard line. The Bulldogs quickly turned the ball back over at their 28, but the Bulldogs's defense stiffened once again, holding the Tigers on downs at the 22. The Bulldogs drove into Tigers' territory, sustained by a 30-yard scamper by Parn, who rushed for 78 yards and passed for another 53 yards. The drive stalled at the Marceline 13, but the Bulldogs forced a Tigers' punt, which Parn returned down the left sideline for a touchdown. The Bulldogs added the two-point conversion with Parn's pass to Peyton Parn, capping the first quarter with an 8-0 lead.
Both teams played to a stalemate in the second and third quarters, with the only excitement being Tigers' Dax Thomas' 51-yard scamper to the Brookfield 25, stopped only by John Wahlgren's score-saving tackle. The Bulldogs again stonewalled the Tigers on downs, entering the final quarter still clinging to an 8-0 lead.
The Tigers managed another drive into Brookfield territory, but the defense, again up to the task, forced another punt, with the Bulldogs taking over at their 18 with just over 6:00 minutes remaining. The Bulldogs methodically moved the ball downfield, bleeding the clock and the Tigers' hopes of a victory. Those hopes were quickly dashed with Carter's 47-yard rumble off right tackle. Colton Parn ended any chance of a Tigers' score with an interception.
Brookfield (1-1) welcomes South Shelby (2-0) at Burlington Field on Friday.
