Brookfield and Macon battled for the entire contest, with the Tigers escaping with 53-52 victory in Friday night's boys varsity conference basketball tilt.
The Bulldogs trailed by four points at halftime, 22-18, and by eight, 28-20, early in the third quarter, when they exploded with a 11-0 run. Kendrell Carter (6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, assist) started it with a three, followed by a Hayden DeJong (11 points, 6 assists, 4 steals, 3 rebounds, block) steal and score. Bryson Shoop (17 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, steal) then drilled a pair of treys, both on assists from DeJong, who both times drove the lane, drawing the defense inside before feeding the wide-open Shoop on the right wing.
The Tigers scored to end the run and pull within 31-30, but Shoop answered with a pair of free throws. A Hank Parks (16 points, 7 rebounds, assist, steal) three and DeJong putback put the 'Dogs ahead 38-30, before the Tigers answered with a putback of their own at the buzzer.
Trailing 40-34 early in the final quarter, the Tigers erupted with a 13-0 run, grabbing a 47-40 lead. Shoop stopped the onslaught with his third trey of the night. After trading buckets, the Tigers added a free throw to go up five. DeJong hit a three on a dish from Parks, but the Tigers answered with a driving layup. Parks followed with his own drive to the hoop, and after a Tigers' turnover, Parks scored again on a lay-in on a dime from DeJong to knot the game at 52-52 with 17 seconds remaining.
A foul on a putback attempt put the Tigers on the line, and a made second free throw put Macon up by one with 4.8 on the clock. With fouls to give, the Tigers committed one with just under 2 seconds remaining. Two deflections later and just .5 seconds left, Parks attempted a lob at the rim to John Walgren (4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), which was short and intercepted.
Ross Ehrich scored two points for the Bulldogs (7-15, 1-5 CCC), who host Fayette tonight.
