After capitalizing on early opportunities, Brookfield squandered chances down the stretch, as Highland rallied for a 54-49 win in Friday's varsity boys basketball matchup.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-5 first-quarter lead, triggered by Hayden DeJong (game-high 23 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals), who scored eight points in the period. Bryson Shoop (5 points, 2 assists, rebound, steal) drilled a three early in the second quarter, pushing the lead to 18-5. The 'Dogs managed to maintain a 21-9 lead midway in the quarter; however, the Cougars recovered with a 14-4 run, knotting the game at 25-25 by halftime.
The Cougars built a seven-point lead in the third, but the Bulldogs battled and drew to within 40-38 at quarter's end. The game remained close throughout the final eight minutes, with the Cougars preserving a slight lead. A bucket by Kendrell Carter (4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) on an offensive board and dish by John Walgren (8 points, 6 rebounds, assist, steal) pulled the 'Dogs to within 51-49. With the chance to tie or take the lead on their following possession, the Cougars forced a turnover and sealed the win with an "and 1" on the other end.
Hank Parks (3 rebounds, 3 steals, assist, block) scored six points, and Phoenix Jordan (two rebounds) had three points. Ross Ehrich added an assist and a steal.
The Bulldogs (6-10) welcome Centralia tonight.
