Hayden DeJong made five free throws in the final 30 seconds, as Brookfield rallied to beat Fayette, 57-54, in an action-filled boys varsity basketball tilt.
After trailing by one at halftime in a back-and-forth contest, Hank Parks (4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals), who pumped in a game-high 25 points, drilled two consecutive threes, putting the Bulldogs ahead, 43-39, late in the third quarter.
However, the Falcons fought back with a trey, strip steal and score, and a layup-and-one, fueling an 8-0 run and a 53-47 advantage with 2:45 remaining.
But the 'Dogs would not be denied. DeJong followed Parks' free throw with two of his own, pulling the Bulldogs to within three, 53-50 with 1:42 to go. A Falcons' turnover seconds later led to Parks' layup and a one-point deficit.
With 29.6 seconds on the clock, DeJong stole an inbounds pass and was fouled on the layup attempt. His free throw knotted the game at 53-53. The Falcons again turned the ball over, then foolishly fouled DeJong on an inbounds pass in the 'Dogs' backcourt. With the Bulldogs in the bonus, DeJong was awarded two free throws, which he coolly sank for a 55-53 lead.
The Falcons had a chance to tie the game with free throws of their own, but just made one. DeJong (13 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds, assist), who was 7-of-10 from the line, made two more free throws following an intentional foul. With the hope of tying the game with a three in the final 10 ticks, the Falcons were forced into another turnover, their sixth in the final two minutes.
Bryson Shoop (4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) scored 12 points, and John Walgren (4 rebounds, 2 steals, assist) added seven points. Ross Erich (2 rebounds, steal), Kendrell Carter (2 steals, assist) and Phoenix Jordan (2 rebounds) also contributed.
The Bulldogs (8-15) welcome Monroe City tonight in the regular season finale.
