Phoenix Jordan poured in a game-high 29 points, and his two free throws with 10.2 seconds remaining propelled Brookfield to a 52-50 victory against Lathrop in last night's entertaining JV boys basketball action.
The game was tightly contested throughout, but Wyatt Garber (2 points) and Phoenix each connected on a pair of free throws late in the third quarter, giving the Bulldogs a 42-35 cushion at the period's end.
The Mules tied the game with a 7-0 run at 5:43 remaining, but the 'Dogs answered with two straight buckets, the latter on a sweet Ky'Ree Jordan dish to Phoenix cutting along the right baseline, to go back up by 4. The Mules answered with a deuce and threatened to tie the game again, but Phoenix blocked a shot, and Bryson Shoop (15 points) capitalized by securing the loose ball and driving the court for a lay-in.
Following a lengthy delay due to an injured Lathrop player, Phoenix scored again, pushing the 'Dogs lead to 50-44. But The Mules stubbornly battled back with a pair of treys to tie the game with 42.3 remaining. The 'Dogs were pressured into a turnover; however, Phoenix responded with a strip steal and go. Fouled on the layup attempt, he calmly sank the two free throws. The Mules called timeout and drew up a play, but it was thwarted on a steal by Coldon Parrent (4 points).
Riley Hinckle (2 points) hit two free throws for the Bulldogs, who were 13-of-16 from the charity stripe.
The JV Bulldogs welcome Putnam County on Wednesday.
